Information for mentors

The following page outlines the student selection process, course selection, the technical administrators' workflow, and the mentor's algorithm for students enrolled in Coursera courses.

1. Student Selection

One of the prerequisites for participation in the Coursera Qazaq Tilinde initiative is to engage a maximum number of university students. Consequently, each cohort should comprise new students who have not previously participated in the program.

  • Following the Ministry of Science and Education's submission of a request to compile student lists for enrollment in the Coursera Qazaq Tilinde program, a selection process is conducted to identify students with no prior participation. Subsequently, each school verifies the list for expelled students or those who plan to drop out.

  • The final list is forwarded to BMG UpSkill, the organization tasked with student enrollment on the platform, and furnishing comprehensive reports on each student to the Ministry of Science and Education.

    2. Discipline and MOOC Selection

  • Once students have been selected by the schools, disciplines for which MOOCs will be assigned are chosen.

  • After identifying the disciplines, MOOCs are searched for on the Coursera platform using a catalog prepared by the Center for Educational Technologies. Course Catalog

  • Mentor assesses the alignment of course content with the curriculum requirements and evaluates its quality and relevance.

    3. MOOC Utilization Model Determination

  • The mentor determines the MOOC utilization model: partial or full replacement of the discipline. Information about the models is available on the page: MOOC Utilization Models

  • In the case of partial replacement, the mentor identifies which parts of the Coursera course can be included in the curriculum, and which parts require additional material or adaptation.

  • In the case of full replacement, the mentor evaluates how well the MOOC content covers all necessary topics and competencies for the studied discipline.

    4. Course Adaptation

  • If necessary, the mentor develops additional materials or assignments to adapt the MOOC content to the curriculum requirements.

    5. Student Orientation

  • The Center for Educational Technologies organizes meetings with students to explain the next steps, such as program overview, platform access, and mandatory course identification.

    6. Student Supervision and Support

  • Mentor provides support to students during their Coursera course, answering questions, explaining materials, and assisting with assignments.

  • Mentor monitors students' progress and ensures timely feedback. The mentor reviews students' progress using a table created by the Center for Educational Technologies.

Note: A student should not only obtain a certificate but also actively engage in the learning process. Student performance includes "Engagement with Material," which shows the percentage of material viewed and completed by the learner. Low engagement (below 60%) indicates insufficient effort or may suggest overly simplified material or academic dishonesty by the student. Engagement is considered adequate when it exceeds 60%.

    7. Assessment of Results

  • Upon completion of the course, the mentor assesses students' performance and results.

  • In the case of successful course completion, the mentor approves and assigns a grade. Successful completion should include obtaining a certificate and student engagement of at least 60%.

  • Procedures for recognizing learning outcomes are outlined in the Regulations on Non-Formal Education. Visit the page Recognition of MOOC Learning Outcomes Procedure for information on credit transfer.

Note: A student must complete the course within the specified timeframe set by the university management.

    Mentor's Role

The instructor responsible for the discipline that is fully or partially replaced by a MOOC acts as a mentor for students participating in platform-based learning. If the course is scheduled within an upcoming or subsequent semester, the mentorship role may be assigned to a group advisor or student counselor overseeing the relevant Coursera courses.

    Technical Administrators' Role

The role of technical administrators overseeing the Coursera Qazaq Tilinde project includes the following main responsibilities:

  • Coordination with BMG UpSkill Administrators: EKTU technical administrators (Center for Educational Technologies staff) directly interact with BMG UpSkill administrators managing the project on the Coursera platform. This includes submitting lists of students to be enrolled on Coursera, inviting them to the platform, and managing student replacements.

  • Student Support Provision: Providing instructions to students on platform access and getting started, as well as addressing any technical issues students may encounter while using the Coursera platform.

  • Collection of Student Progress Statistics: Tracking students' progress on Coursera courses, including their engagement, completed assignments, and tests. This data is then provided to mentors, deputy deans, deans, and university management for analysis and monitoring of student performance.

  • Resolution of Technical Issues Liaising with BMG UpSkill administrators in case of technical problems on the Coursera platform for resolution.
